What is PASS?
PASS is a support and mentoring program designed specifically for DGS students on academic probation. The program was initiated in 2002 and, since then, has evolved to meet the changing needs of the student population.
The program involves the development of a mentoring relationship between a student and their advisor. It is the goal of the advisor to establish rapport and a working relationship with students to empower them to make informed decisions, identify resources, and work on basic study strategies.
The program's goal is to assist students in understanding their intrinsic interests and motivation and in recognizing extrinsic issues that impede academic progress. Together, students and academic advisors craft individualized action plans to enhance academic performance and increase utilization of the tools and resources that the university has to offer.
Participation
Participation in PASS is not just about overcoming immediate progress issues; it is also designed to build each student's recognition of their individual talents, abilities, and strengths over the long term.
The following conditions apply to all students on academic probation:
- Must raise or maintain a 2.00 UIUC cumulative GPA in order to achieve good standing.
- Cannot elect to take a course credit/no credit while on academic probation.
- Must be enrolled in at least 12 hours.
Students invited to participate in PASS must do the following:
- Attend an informational meeting at the start of the semester.
- Meet with their advisor individually to sign an advising agreement either agreeing to or declining participation in PASS.
PASS participants are expected to do the following:
- Meet with their assigned advisor at least 5 times during the semester.
- Create semester goals specific to individual needs and interests.
- Track academic progress closely with the assistance of their advisor.
- Observe drop and credit/no credit deadlines carefully.
PASS+
Based on an evaluation of semester grade point averages, students identified as being at greatest academic risk will be targeted to participate in PASS+, a specialized version of PASS which provides an even greater level of support.
PASS+ students will be shifted to the advising roster of one of two PASS+ advisors who will work more intensively with each student to ensure academic success. PASS+ participation is mandatory; upon successful completion of PASS+, students will return to the roster of their previous advisor.
Students invited to participate in PASS+ must do the following:
- Attend an informational meeting at the start of the semester.
- Meet with their PASS+ advisor individually to sign an advising agreement.
- Meet with their PASS+ advisor regularly throughout the semester, for a minimum of 5 appointments or more as deemed necessary by the PASS+ advisor.
- Create semester goals specific to individual needs and interests.
- Track academic progress closely with the assistance of their PASS+ advisor.
- Observe drop and credit/no credit deadlines carefully.
